An Owl Showed Us The Moon
Limited Edition Print by Mike Heseltine

A Limited Edition signed print produced on A3 40 gms hand made paper (image size is 30cm by 22.5cm). The paper is from Nepal and is the inner bark of the Lokta bush. Each print is signed by the artist and the print run is limited to 1000. As the paper is hand made, each print is totally unique and will have different textures or marks produced by the paper making process. Please note that colours on screen may be very slightly different from the original print you will recieve.

The natural oak frame is specially chosen by the artist, with a deep mount and the glazing is an acrylic glass that is suitable for being transported. New owners may prefer to replace the acrylic glass with normal glass.

This charcoal drawing was inspired when an owl hovered above us on a summer evening. The moon is a symbol in Buddhism of non attachment. It cannot be owned, bought or sold. It is beautiful and anyone can appreciate it. The owl brought us into the present moment, where thoughts of past and future evaporate and a different awareness arises. The owl, like the moon, symbolised the reality that everything is impermanent and that all possessions are just illusions. The owl just came and went, like everything else will come and go. I believe true happiness, which we all strive for, can only be achieved when we are aware of the present and let go of attachments to possessions, thoughts and dogma. I imagine the moment before death will be similar, in that there will be a realisation that all material possessions are meaningless. We enter this world with nothing and leave with nothing. What is important is that we are aware of and enjoy the moment. There is saying which I believe may originate in Islam, that goes "Die before you die". When you die, you have to let go of everything. If we let the moon remind us that everything outside the present moment is an illusion, we can let go of so many habits, attachments and ideas that waste our precious time on this earth.
